How Many Hours Is Full Time?

Most US employers call 40 hours a week full time, but there is no single legal definition. The Affordable Care Act uses 30 hours, the Bureau of Labor Statistics uses 35, and the Fair Labor Standards Act does not define full time at all.

Full time by definition

Most employers40 hours a week (sometimes 37.5)Job offers, salaries, benefits eligibility in company policy
Affordable Care Act (IRS)30 hours a week, or 130 hours a monthEmployer health-coverage requirement for companies with 50+ full-time employees
Bureau of Labor Statistics35 hours or more a weekEmployment statistics
Fair Labor Standards ActNo definitionOvertime is about hours over 40, not about full or part time

So the answer depends on why you are asking. For overtime pay, full time does not matter: a non-exempt employee earns overtime for every hour over 40 in a workweek, whether the job is called full time or not. For health insurance through a large employer, the 30-hour line is the one that counts. For a job offer, read the offer: it should say how many hours a week the employer expects.

How many hours is part time?

Part time is anything below the employer’s full-time threshold. In practice part-time jobs range from a few hours to 34 hours a week. Many part-time schedules stop at 29 hours to stay below the ACA’s 30-hour line, and the BLS counts anyone working 1 to 34 hours as part time.

The ACA’s monthly test is 130 hours, which is 30 hours × 52 weeks ÷ 12 months. A 29-hour week averages 125.7 hours a month — just under it.

Is 32 hours full time?

Under the ACA, yes: anything from 30 hours a week counts. In many employers’ own policies, 32 hours is treated as full time for benefits too, especially in four-day-week arrangements (4 × 8 hours). In BLS statistics it is part time, because it is below 35.

Is 37.5 hours full time?

Yes. A 37.5-hour week is a common full-time schedule: 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM with an unpaid 30-minute lunch is 7:30 hours a day, 37:30 a week. Many offices define full time as 37.5 hours precisely because the lunch break is unpaid.

Can full-time workers work more than 40 hours?

Yes. There is no federal limit on weekly hours for adults. What changes is the pay: non-exempt employees must get at least 1.5× their regular rate for every hour over 40. A 50-hour week at $20 is 40 × $20 + 10 × $30 = $1,100.00. Check your own week with the overtime calculator.

Exempt employees — salaried staff paid at least $684 a week who do executive, administrative or professional work — are not owed overtime, no matter how many hours they work. Several states set a higher salary threshold.

Full-time hours and pay

Because full time usually means 40 hours, salary conversions use 2,080 hours a year. $25 an hour full time is $52,000.00 a year; the same rate at 30 hours a week is $39,000.00. The salary to hourly calculator works for any weekly hours.

Benefits that depend on hours

  • Health insurance: employers with 50 or more full-time-equivalent employees must offer coverage to people averaging 30+ hours a week.
  • Retirement plans: 401(k) plans must let long-term part-time employees join after they work at least 500 hours in consecutive years (rules updated by SECURE 2.0).
  • Paid time off: set by company policy and some state or city sick-leave laws, often accrued per hour worked.

Hours limits for teenagers

Federal child-labor rules cap the hours of 14- and 15-year-olds: no more than 3 hours on a school day and 18 hours in a school week, 8 hours on a non-school day and 40 hours in a non-school week, and only between 7 AM and 7 PM (9 PM from June 1 to Labor Day). From 16, federal law sets no hour limits, though many states do.

How to count your weekly hours

Add up each day's clock-in to clock-out time minus unpaid breaks. A week of 8:30 AM to 5:00 PM with a 30-minute lunch is 40:00 hours — full time by any of the definitions above. Two such days plus three 4-hour shifts is 28:00, part time.

Is there a maximum number of hours?

For adults, federal law sets no daily or weekly maximum — it only requires overtime pay after 40 hours for non-exempt employees. A few industries have their own limits: truck drivers (11 driving hours after 10 hours off), airline pilots and some healthcare roles. Some states also restrict mandatory overtime for nurses.

What employers often set instead is a minimum: to keep full-time benefits, you may need to average 30 or more hours over a "measurement period" of 3 to 12 months under the ACA look-back method. If your hours dip one week, they can be made up across the period.

Keep a record of your hours

If your status depends on the hours you work — for benefits eligibility, or to show you crossed the overtime line — keep your own record. The time card calculator adds up clock-in and clock-out times, takes off unpaid breaks and prints a weekly timesheet.
